Часто задаваемые вопросы
MetaCleaner is a free online tool to remove, view and edit metadata from photos and videos. All files are processed locally in your browser — your data never leaves your device.
What is metadata in photos?
Photo metadata (EXIF data) is hidden information that your camera or smartphone automatically embeds in every image: GPS coordinates, exact capture date and time, device model, exposure settings, author name, camera serial number, and more. This data is invisible in the image itself but accessible to anyone who receives the file.
Why should I remove metadata from photos?
Metadata can reveal your location, daily routine, and personal information. When sharing photos online, GPS coordinates can expose where you live or work. Removing metadata protects your privacy and prevents unwanted tracking by anyone who accesses your files.
Are my files safe? Do they get uploaded to a server?
Yes, completely safe. MetaCleaner processes all files locally in your browser — no file is ever sent to our servers. We physically cannot see your photos or videos. This guarantees maximum privacy when removing metadata from your files.
What file formats are supported?
MetaCleaner supports all popular formats: images — JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF; videos — MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WMV, M4V. In addition to metadata removal, format conversion (e.g. HEIC to JPG) and compression with quality settings are also available.
Does removing metadata affect image quality?
No. Removing metadata does not affect the visual quality of your photos. The pixel data of the image remains completely intact — only the header information in the file changes. Your photos will look exactly the same as before.
How do I remove GPS location from iPhone photos?
iPhone photos (HEIC/JPEG) automatically embed GPS coordinates from your location at the time of capture. To remove GPS from iPhone photos: open MetaCleaner, drag your photos into the Metadata tab and click "Clean metadata" — GPS coordinates, timestamp and device info are removed instantly in your browser. HEIC files are automatically converted to JPG in the process.
Can I remove metadata from multiple photos at once?
Yes. MetaCleaner supports batch processing — you can drop up to 10 photos or videos at once and clean all of them in one click. All files are processed simultaneously in your browser and downloaded as a single ZIP archive. No need to process files one by one.
How do I remove metadata from a video file?
MetaCleaner removes metadata from video files (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and more) without re-encoding — so the process is fast and there is no quality loss. All video metadata including title, author, creation date, GPS coordinates and software tags are stripped. The video is processed on the server and returned clean, without storing your file.
How to convert HEIC to JPG online for free?
To convert HEIC to JPG: go to the Converter tab on MetaCleaner, upload your HEIC files, select JPG as the output format and click Convert. The conversion is free, supports batch processing (up to 10 files), and automatically strips all metadata from the converted images. HEIC is the default format for iPhone photos — JPG works on all devices and platforms.
Is it safe to use online metadata removal tools after the FBI malware warning?
In 2025, the FBI warned about malicious online file converters that install malware. MetaCleaner is safe because metadata processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript — your files never leave your device and nothing is installed on your computer. For video operations that require server processing, files are deleted immediately after completion and never stored or analyzed.
What is the difference between EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) stores technical camera data: GPS coordinates, shutter speed, ISO, aperture, device model. IPTC stores editorial information: title, caption, copyright, keywords, author. XMP is Adobe's extensible standard used by Lightroom and Photoshop for editing history and ratings. MetaCleaner removes all three types from your files in one operation.
Does removing metadata make the file smaller?
Yes, slightly. EXIF metadata typically adds 20–60 KB to a JPEG file, so removing it reduces the file size by that amount. For significant size reduction, use MetaCleaner's Compress tab — it can reduce image size by 60–80% and video size by 40–70% while maintaining good visual quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
What file formats can I convert?
MetaCleaner supports conversion between all popular image formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF. Videos can be converted to MP4 (H.264) or animated GIF. HEIC to JPG is the most popular conversion — it works on all Apple photo files.
Does format conversion affect image quality?
For lossless-to-lossy conversions (e.g. PNG to JPEG), some compression is applied — but at standard settings it is not noticeable. Converting between lossless formats (PNG to WebP) preserves full quality. HEIC to JPG conversion is virtually lossless.
Can I convert multiple files at once?
Yes. Upload up to 10 images at once and convert them all in a single click. All converted files can be downloaded individually or as a ZIP archive.
How long does video conversion take?
Image conversion is near-instant. Video conversion to MP4 or GIF is processed on our server and typically takes 30–120 seconds depending on file size and length.
Is the converter free to use?
Yes, fully free. No registration, no watermarks, no hidden limits. Just upload your files and convert.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much can compression reduce file size?
Image compression typically reduces file size by 40–80% depending on the quality setting. Video compression can reduce size by 40–70%. The exact result depends on the original file and chosen quality level.
Does compression reduce visible quality?
At the default "Balanced" setting, quality loss is minimal and usually not noticeable. For maximum compression, some artifacts may appear. You can always adjust the quality slider to find the right balance.
Can I compress video files?
Yes. MetaCleaner compresses MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WMV, and M4V videos. You can compress up to 3 video files at once. Video is re-encoded to H.264, which is widely compatible with all devices.
How many files can I compress at once?
Up to 10 image files or up to 3 video files simultaneously. All compressed files can be downloaded individually or as a ZIP archive.
Does compression remove metadata?
Yes. Metadata is automatically stripped during compression. If you need to keep certain metadata fields, use the Metadata tab to view and selectively edit them before compressing.
Resize & Crop
Change dimensions of your photos. Keep aspect ratio, fill to size, or stretch to exact dimensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Fit, Fill, and Stretch?
"Fit" scales the image to fit within the target dimensions while keeping the original aspect ratio — the image may be smaller than the target size. "Fill" scales and center-crops the image to exactly fill the target dimensions. "Stretch" resizes to exact dimensions ignoring proportions, which may distort the image.
Can I resize multiple photos at once?
Yes. Upload up to 10 photos and resize them all to the same target dimensions in one click. Each file is processed individually and can be downloaded separately or as a ZIP archive.
Does resizing reduce image quality?
MetaCleaner uses high-quality Lanczos resampling, which preserves sharpness better than standard methods. Downscaling (making images smaller) is lossless in terms of quality. Upscaling (making images larger) will reduce sharpness as pixel data must be interpolated.
How do I keep the aspect ratio?
Click the lock icon between the Width and Height input fields. When locked, changing one dimension automatically updates the other to maintain the original proportions of the image.
Rotate & Flip
Rotate or mirror your photos. Supports batch processing — apply the same transform to all files at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rotate multiple images at once?
Yes. Upload up to 10 images and apply the same rotation and flip to all of them simultaneously. All files are processed in one click and can be downloaded individually or as a ZIP archive.
Does rotating affect image quality?
90°, 180°, and 270° rotations and horizontal/vertical flips are lossless — the image data is rearranged without re-encoding. There is absolutely no quality loss.
What is the difference between Rotate and Flip?
Rotate turns the image clockwise: 90°, 180°, or 270°. Flip mirrors the image horizontally (left-right) or vertically (top-bottom). You can combine both — for example, rotate 90° and then flip horizontally to get any desired orientation.
Can I rotate video files?
Currently the Rotate tool supports images only (JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, BMP, TIFF). For video rotation, use the Converter tab to export as MP4, which re-encodes with the correct orientation.
Trim video
Cut a clip from a video — no re-encoding, no quality loss, instant result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does trimming re-encode the video?
No. MetaCleaner uses FFmpeg stream-copy mode, which means trimming is done without re-encoding. The result is lossless — original video and audio quality is preserved exactly, and processing is very fast.
What time format should I use?
You can use HH:MM:SS (e.g. 00:01:30), MM:SS (e.g. 1:30), or just seconds (e.g. 90). Leave the Start field empty to keep from the beginning of the video; leave the End field empty to keep until the end.
What video formats can I trim?
Supported formats: MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WMV, M4V, WebM. The output file keeps the same container format as the input file.
Is there a file size limit for trimming?
The maximum file size is 500 MB. Trimming large files may take up to a few minutes as the file needs to be uploaded and processed on the server.
Extract audio
Pull the audio track from any video — save as MP3, AAC or WAV.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which audio format should I choose: MP3, AAC, or WAV?
MP3 is the most compatible and works on all devices and platforms. AAC offers slightly better quality at the same bitrate and is preferred on Apple devices. WAV is uncompressed and lossless but produces very large files — best for further audio editing in DAW software.
Does audio extraction affect quality?
MP3 and AAC are lossy formats, so some minimal quality loss occurs during encoding. WAV extraction is lossless. All formats are extracted at high bitrate (192 kbps for MP3/AAC) to preserve as much quality as possible.
What video formats are supported?
You can extract audio from MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WMV, M4V, and WebM video files. If the video file has no audio track, the extraction will return an error.
Can I extract audio from multiple videos at once?
Currently the Extract Audio tool processes one file at a time. Drop a new video file after each extraction to process the next one.
Watermark photos
Add a text watermark to your photos. Choose position, size and opacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watermark multiple images at once?
Yes. Upload up to 10 images and apply the same watermark text, position, opacity, and font size to all of them in one click. All files are processed simultaneously.
Can I change the watermark color or font?
Currently MetaCleaner uses white text with a drop shadow for maximum readability on any background. Custom colors and font choices are planned for a future update.
What does the Opacity slider do?
Opacity controls how transparent the watermark text is. At 100% the text is fully opaque and clearly visible. Lower values (e.g. 30–50%) make the watermark subtle and semi-transparent.
Does adding a watermark affect image quality?
Watermarking adds a text overlay but does not otherwise compress or alter the image pixels. The output image quality is the same as the input.
